University of Utah Seismograph Stations

Released: August 18, 2007 09:02 AM MDT

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a minor earthquake of magnitude 3.9 occurred in southwestern Utah this morning at 7:16 AM (MDT). The epicenter of the shock was located 23 mi WSW of Minersville, UT and 30 miles NNW of Cedar City. Eight earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater have occurred within 15 mi of the epicenter of this event since 1962; the largest of these events was a magnitude 3.9 in December 1987.

Released: August 06, 2007 04:10 AM MDT

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a light earthquake of magnitude 4.0 occurred at 02:48 AM on August 06, 2007 (MDT) in central Utah. The epicenter of the shock was located in the Huntington Canyon area of the Wasatch Plateau, 14 mi ESE of Mount Pleasant, UT. More than 30 earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater have occurred within 15 mi of the epicenter of this event since 1962; the largest of these events was a magnitude 3.9 in December 1987.

Released: June 10, 2007 at 07:50 p.m. MDT

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a minor earthquake of magnitude 3.8 occurred at 07:03 p.m. this evening on June 10, 2007 (MDT). The epicenter of the shock was located near the Utah-Nevada border, 18 mi WSW of Enterprise, UT, and 10 miles ESE of Joseca, Nevada. The epicentral area is sparsely populated and is the same area where a magnitude 5.6 shock occurred in August 1966.

Released: May 28, 2007 at 11:20 p.m. MDT

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a small earthquake of magnitude 2.3 occurred at 09:05 p.m. this evening on May 28, 2007 (MDT). The epicenter of the shock was located beneath the town of South Jordan, Utah, in the southwestern part of the Salt Lake Valley. The earthquake was reported felt by residents of South Jordan, West Jordan and other nearby towns.

Released: February 24, 2007 at 09:47 p.m. MST

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a minor earthquake of magnitude 3.7 occurred this evening at 08:52 PM on February 24, 2007 (MST). The epicenter of the shock was located 22 mi SE of Afton, WY in the Bridger National Forest. The shock originated beneath the Salt River Range. One earthquake of magnitude 3.6 occurred in this general area on December 2, 1971.

Released: December 20, 2006 at 11:39 a.m. MST

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a minor earthquake of magnitude 3.4 occurred in northern Utah this morning at 11:15 AM (MST). The epicenter of the shock was located beneath the Wasatch Range 8 miles NE of Morgan and 20 miles ESE of Ogden. The shock was reported felt along the Wasatch front urban corridor between Ogden and northern Salt Lake City. Released: November 17, 2006 at 12:30 a.m. MST

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a small earthquake occurred in the northwestern part of the Salt Lake Valley at 11:22 PM on Thursday November 16, 2006 (MST). The epicenter of the magnitude 2.60 shock was located 3 mi NE of Magna, Utah, and 9 miles west of Salt Lake City, Utah. The earthquake was reported felt in Magna, Salt Lake City, and Layton, Utah. A total of 5 earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater have occurred within the same general area since 1962. The largest of these events was a magnitude 5.20 on September 05, 1962. Released: September 2, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. MDT

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a minor earthquake of magnitude 3.6 occurred in southeastern Idaho at 1:55 p.m. MDT today. The epicenter of the shock was located 9 miles west-southwest of Georgetown, Idaho, and 14 miles northwest of Montpelier, Idaho. Today's earthquake was reported felt in Bern, Montpelier, and Preston, Idaho. Two earthquakes of magnitude 4.3 and 4.0 occurred in this same area on June 30 and July 14, 2006, respectively.

Released: July 14, 2006 at 11:38 a.m. MDT

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a light earthquake of magnitude 4.0 occurred this morning in southeastern Idaho at 11:06 a.m. (MDT). The epicenter of the shock was located 11 miles west-southwest of Georgetown, Idaho, and 15 miles south of Soda Springs, Idaho. The shock was reported felt at numerous localities in southeast Idaho, including Grace, Lava Hot Springs, Downey, Soda Springs, Bancroft, and Pocatello. A magnitude 4.3 earthquake occurred in this same area on June 30, 2006.

Released: June 30, 2006 at 11:25 a.m. MDT

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a light earthquake of magnitude 4.3 occurred this morning in southeastern Idaho at 10:55 a.m. (MDT). The epicenter of the shock was located 11 miles WSW of Georgetown, Idaho, and 16 miles south of Soda Springs, Idaho. The shock was reportedly felt by residents of Thatcher, Montpelier, Paris, and Preston, Idaho. The shock occurred in a seismically active area. Since 1962, thirty earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or larger have occurred within 15 miles of this morning's earthquake. A magnitude 4.7 earthquake occurred in October 1982, 9 miles NNW of Georgetown.

Released: June 11, 2006 at 4:40 a.m. MDT

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a minor earthquake of magnitude 3.6 occurred in central Utah at 4:01 a.m. (MDT). The epicenter of the shock was located in a remote area beneath the eastern side of the Wasatch Range, 3 miles northeast of Strawberry Reservoir. This location is 31 miles east of Provo and 56 miles southeast of Salt Lake City. The shock has not been reported felt.

Released: January 27, 2006 at 12:30 a.m. MST

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a magnitude 3.8 earthquake occurred at 11:47 p.m. (MST) Thursday night in central Utah. The epicenter of the shock was located 8 miles ESE of Castle Dale and 30 miles south of Price. The shock was reported felt in the nearby towns of Huntington and Ferron and occurred in the same area as a magnitude 5.3 earthquake in August 1988.

Update (January 27, 2006 at 9:00 a.m. MST): Magnitude revised to 3.6; report from the Emery County Sheriff's Office indicates that the earthquake was widely felt in Castle Valley between Huntington and Ferron.

Released: November 14, 2005 at 1:50 p.m. MST

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a pair of small earthquakes, each of magnitude 3.0 occurred at 1:25 p.m. (MST) this afternoon in Sanpete Valley in central Utah. The epicenter of the shocks was approximately 1 mile SE of Spring City and 9 miles SSW of Mt. Pleasant. The shocks were reported felt in Mt. Pleasant and presumably were felt in Spring City. Eight smaller earthquakes between magnitude 1.4 and 2.2 occurred earlier today in the same area. Prior earthquake activity in this general area during the past 20 years has included seven earthquakes in the magnitude 3 range.

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a small earthquake of magnitude 2.8 occurred at 03:54 a.m. (MDT) this morning beneath the Wasatch Range in northern Utah. The epicenter of the shock was located 4 miles NNE of Alta, 6 miles W of Park City, and 16 miles ESE of Salt Lake City. The shock was reported felt in Park City, Sandy, Draper, and Salt Lake City.

Released: July 29, 2005 at 3:20 p.m. MDT

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a minor earthquake of magnitude 3.7 occurred at 02:46 p.m. (MDT) this afternoon in central Utah. The epicenter of the shock was located 1 mile NNW of Richfield and was felt by local residents. An aftershock of magnitude 2.5 occurred two minutes later. The Richfield area and nearby parts of the Sevier Valley have experienced eight earthquakes of magnitude 5 or greater in historical time including damaging earthquakes in 1901 and 1921. A shock of magnitude 3.7 would expectedly produce only slight damage, if any, close to the epicenter.

Released: July 20, 2005 at 2:07 a.m. MDT

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a minor earthquake of magnitude 3.6 occurred at 01:06 a.m. (MDT) early today in south-central Utah. The epicenter of the shock was located 7 miles SW of Cove Fort and 19 miles NNW of Beaver. Seven shocks in the magnitude 3 range have occurred in this area since February 2004. The area is sparsely populated and damage is unlikely.

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a minor earthquake of magnitude 3.6 occurred at 07:01 a.m. (MDT) this morning in southern Utah. The epicenter of the shock was located in a remote area 6 miles NW of Alton and 31 miles ESE of Cedar City. A magnitude 2.8 shock occurred in this same area yesterday at 3:45 p.m. (MDT). This morning's shock was reported felt at Alton.

Released: March 14, 2005 at 6:10 p.m. MST

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a minor earthquake of magnitude 3.5 earthquake occurred at 5:21 p.m. MST today near the Arizona-Utah border. The epicenter of the shock was located in northern Arizona beneath the Kaibab Indian reservation, 9 miles WSW of Fredonia, Arizona, and 13 miles SW of Kanab, Utah. The shock was reported felt by residents in both of these areas. A magnitude 5.7 earthquake occurred in this same general area in 1959.

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a magnitude 3.6 earthquake occurred at 10:38 a.m. MST this morning in SW Utah. The epicenter of the shock was located 6 miles NW of Cedar City and was reported felt by many in the Cedar City area. A magnitude 3.6 shock would not be expected to produce damage. The last earthquake of magnitude 3 or larger in this area was a magnitude 3.2 shock in May 2003.

Released: November 7, 2004 at 1:45 a.m. MST

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a magnitude 4.1 earthquake occurred at 11:55 p.m. MST Saturday night, November 6, in southwestern Colorado close to the Utah border. The epicenter of the shock was located in the Paradox Valley area, 7 miles east of the Utah border and 16 miles SW of the town of Uravan, Colorado. The earthquake was reported felt in Grand Junction, Colorado, about 60 miles away. Prior shocks in the same general area as last night's earthquake include a magnitude 4.3 earthquake in May 2000 and two shocks of magnitude 3.7 and 3.8 in June and July of 1999.

Released: March 19, 2004 at 8:03 a.m. MST

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a magnitude 3.0 earthquake occurred at 07:23 a.m. MST this morning in central Utah. The epicenter of the shock was located 5 miles SW of Nephi in the same general area as a magnitude 3.3 shock at 7:58 a.m. yesterday. Another shock of magnitude 3.0 occurred in the same area at 10:39 p.m. last night. This morning's earthquake was reported felt in Nephi and is part of an ongoing series of small earthquakes that began on March 10, 2004, and is not considered unusual. A similar sequence in this same area in December 2003 had a largest shock of magnitude 3.7.

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a magnitude 2.6 earthquake occurred at 2:22 p.m. MST today, March 18. The epicenter of the shock was located in the northwestern part of the Salt Lake Valley, 2 miles NE of the town of Magna and 9 miles WSW of Salt Lake City. The earthquake was reported felt in Magna. A magnitude 2.0 earthquake occurred in this same area at 7:38 p.m. on Tuesday, March 16. The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a magnitude 3.3 earthquake occurred at 7:58 a.m. MST this morning. The epicenter of the shock was located in the West Hills area of central Utah, 7 miles SW of the town of Nephi and 8 miles NNW of the town of Levan. The earthquake was felt by residents of these two towns. Two magnitude 3.7 earthquakes occurred in this same area on December 26, 2003, and some smaller earthquakes have occurred in the area this year. The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a magnitude 3.5 earthquake occurred at 5:41 p.m. MST on Tuesday, February 24. The epicenter of the shock was located in the northern part of Cache Valley along the Utah-Idaho border, 1 mile NNE of Lewiston, Utah, and 8 miles S of Preston, Idaho. The shock was felt in both of these towns and in other towns in the vicinity. Today's earthquake occurred in the same area as a magnitude 2.8 felt earthquake on February 12. Released: February 13, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. MST

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that some small earthquakes occurred last night in northern Utah and southeastern Idaho. A shock of magnitude 2.8 occurred Thursday night, February 12, at 11:35 p.m. in the northern Cache Valley along the Utah-Idaho border. This shock was located 1.5 miles SSW of Franklin, ID, and 2 miles NE of Lewiston, UT. It was felt in both of these towns and in Preston, ID. Several small earthquakes also occurred 2 miles northwest of Soda Springs, ID at the southern end of the Ninety Percent Range. The largest of these earthquakes, magnitude 2.7, occurred on Friday morning, February 13, at 4:56 a.m., and was felt in Soda Springs, ID. Other earthquakes near Soda Springs included shocks of about magnitude 2 on Thursday evening, February 12, at 6:03 p.m. and 10:34 p.m. Those who felt the quakes are encouraged to fill out a survey form on the Seismograph Stations web site: http://www.quake.utah.edu.

Released: December 26, 2003 at 9:30 p.m. MST

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that three small earthquakes occurred today in the West Hills area of central Utah, 7 miles SW of the town of Nephi and 7 miles NW of the town of Levan. The times and magnitudes are as follows: 5:39 p.m., M 3.8; 5:40 p.m., M 3.6; and 5:43 p.m., M 3.8. The largest two earthquakes were reported felt in Nephi and in other nearby towns. The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a magnitude 3.7 earthquake occurred in northern Utah at 7:54 P.M. MDT this evening. The epicenter of the shock was located 8 miles east of Huntsville and 19 miles ENE of Ogden. The shock was reported felt at huntsville, at Wellsville to the north, and in Ogden to the west. The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a minor earthquake of magnitude 4.4ccurred in northern Utah at 7:04 p.m. (MDT) on Wednesday, April 16. The epicenter of the shock was located 3 miles ENE of Ogden and 2 miles South of Levan, Utah, at the Western edge of the Sun Pitch Mountains. The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a minor earthquake of magnitude 3.7 occurred in northern Utah at 10:02 p.m. (MST) this evening. The epicenter of the shock was located 9 miles ENE of Ogden and 2 miles WNW of Huntsville. The shock was reported felt in Huntsville, Ogden, and surrounding areas. Released: July 28, 2002 at 2:15 p.m. MDT

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a small earthquake of magnitude 3.7 occurred at 1:38 p.m. (MDT) this afternoon beneath the Wasatch Range in a rural area of northern Utah. The epicenter of the shock was located 12 miles WNW of Randolph and 23 miles east of Logan. A smaller shock of magnitude 3.1 occurred in the same area earlier today at 5:09 a.m. No reports have been received that either shock was felt.* For earthquake information in Utah, see quake.utah.edu.

Released: January 20, 2002 at 10:20 a.m. MST

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a small earthquake of magnitude 3.5 occurred at 10:20 a.m. (MST), this morning in southwestern Utah. The epicenter of the shock was located 7 miles south of Beaver and was felt by some in Beaver. This morning's shock occurred in a seismically active area and it is not considered unusual.
